division, will operate an Africa news bureau headquartered in Mombassa,
Kenya. The Kenya news bureau will be mandated to report on regional and
continent sports covering all of Sub-Saharan Africa with special
emphasis on the twenty countries that comprise Eastern Africa.
On the expansion announcement, Stryker-Indigo Vice President, Darril Fosty, said, "Few people realize the diversity of the East Africa region nor the fact that the total population of these 20 countries is 340 million people - making it larger in population size than the United States" Added Fosty, "This is an emerging sports market that is under-served by the traditional brands and global media. As a result, their sporting communities are almost invisible internationally. We want to showcase this region and to work with groups and individuals within these countries to develop future regional brands and business opportunities."
According to Fosty, "The East Africa Sports news site and Kenya bureau will allow us to fully promote African sports. We also see this as part of our global expansion that will make Boxscore a major entity in international sports reporting and product development."
Boxscore's Kenya news bureau operations will report on twenty specific countries. These nations, and their current population estimates, are: South Sudan (pop. 8 million), Eritrea (pop.6 million), Djibouti (pop. 818,000), Ethiopia (pop. 84 million), Somalia (pop. 10 million), Uganda (pop. 35 million), Kenya (pop. 43 million), Burundi (pop. 8.7 million), Rwanda (pop. 11.6 million), Tanzania (pop. 43 million), Seychelles (pop. 84,000), Comores (pop. 798,000), Mayotte (pop. 194,000), Madagascar (pop. 22 million) , Mauritius (pop. 1.2 million), Reunion (pop. 839,000), Mozambique (pop. 22 million), Zimbabwe (pop. 12.6 million), Zambia (pop. 14.3 million), Malawi (pop. 14.9 million).
Due to the language diversity of this geographic region, the Kenya operations will feature articles written in three languages: English, French, and Swahili. "There are an estimated 60-million people who speak Swahili in these countries. We will be the first international sporting news site to have journalists write articles in Swahili so that we can reach this market," said Fosty. A follow-up announcement pertaining to the establishment of the Kenya bureau is expected by early next week.
This is the second major expansion move by Stryker-Indigo New York in the past two weeks. Last week, the company launched South Seas - Magazine of the Pacific (www.southseasmag.com), an online newswire platform covering Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the Islands of Oceania.
Stryker-Indigo New York was founded in 1996 by Canadian historians and filmmakers George and Darril Fosty. In 2010, Stryker-Indigo launched the Boxscore News World Sportswire, a global sports news division. Boxscore News currently has media partnering agreements with a number of independent sporting sites in six countries (Canada, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Turkey and the United States). Boxscore also has contributing writers in five countries (Canada, United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Kenya). In early 2012, Stryker-Indigo announced plans to spin-off their Boxscore News division and to create a stand-alone international media entity beginning in 2013.
