Inbee Park leads US Women's Open after 3 rounds

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) ? Inbee Park was mad, even if it didn't show in her always placid demeanor.

She had made bogey, her third straight, on a hole she thought she should have birdied, and the world's top-ranked player was looking a bit shaky.

Time for a clutch putt.

Park is now one round away from history, leading the U.S. Women's Open by four strokes. She shot 1-under 71 on Saturday in harsh conditions at Sebonack and was 10 under for the tournament.

Fellow South Korean I.K. Kim had a 73 to remain in second but lost two strokes to Park. With the wind whipping, the course set up long and the pin placements tricky, Park was the only player to shoot under par in the third round.

No one has ever won the first three majors in a year when there were at least four.

"I'm just going to try to do the same thing that I did for the last three days," Park said. "Yeah, it will be a big day. But it's just a round of golf, and I just try not to think about it so much."

She wasn't too disappointed by her bogeys on the 11th and 12th; those were tough holes. But on the par-5 13th, her chip on her third shot rolled into the bunker when it should have put her in position for a birdie putt.

She still led by three strokes but appeared vulnerable - at least by her recently lofty standards.

"That bogey was a bad bogey," Park said, "so after that I really got my concentration going."

She was unlucky then lucky on the par-4 14th. She thought her second shot would be pushed back by the wind, but it carried too far and settled on the ridge above the hole. No worries: Park simply holed a 30-foot, downhill putt for birdie.

"That was a big putt for me," she said. "Those three bogeys were very tough to handle in the kind of situation that I was in."

A hole later, she made a 15-foot birdie putt.

It looked as though nobody would break par for the day until she birdied No. 18. Only five players were under par for the tournament.

England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff (74) was third at 3 under. She had to play 21 holes Saturday after the second round was suspended the night before because of fog. Park had good timing Friday: Her group was on the 18th fairway when the horn sounded, so she was able to finish off her round and rest up for the weekend.

Not a morning person, Ewart Shadoff didn't enjoy waking up at 4:30 a.m. She birdied the 18th hole to earn a spot in the final group with Park and Kim, then took a nap in the four-plus hours between rounds.

Ewart Shadoff had a chance to make things interesting on No. 12 with Park on the way to a bogey. But her long birdie putt slid over the hole, and she missed the par putt. Instead of pulling within two strokes of Park, Ewart Shadoff remained four back.

Then she bogeyed two of the last three holes.

Kim had a double bogey on No. 3 to fall back. She played 2 under the rest of the way, but that one bad hole allowed Park to put some distance between them.

"She is playing great. But you never know, I might have a great day tomorrow," Kim said. "So golf is a different thing than other sports. That's why you play four rounds."

If Park shoots even-par or better Sunday, it will be just the fourth time the U.S. Women's Open was won with a score in double digits below par.

No wonder Brittany Lincicome joked to reporters, "I think Inbee's playing a different golf course, which you guys are unaware of yet."

Certainly feels that way.

With Park again on a different plane from the rest of the field, the biggest excitement Saturday might have come when Jessica Korda fired her caddie after nine holes and replaced him with her boyfriend.

The switch seemed to work: After shooting 5 over on the front nine, Korda was 1 under the rest of the way. She finished with a 76 and was tied for sixth at 1 over, 11 strokes behind Park.

The 2008 U.S. Women's Open champion, Park has already won five times this year, including her last two tournaments.

"I'm just going to think that I.K. and I am tied starting in tomorrow's play because anything can happen out here," she said. "I mean, four shots, it could be nothing around this golf course. So I just have to keep pushing myself to make pars. I think par is going to be good enough tomorrow, but I'm just going to try to do my best. A lot of thinking going on, a lot of pressure.

"But I've done that before, so I think the experience is going to help me going through it tomorrow."

Family: American killed in Egypt was a teacher

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (AP) ? The family of an American college student killed in Egypt during violent protests says their son cared passionately about the Middle East and was in the country to teach English to children and to improve his own Arabic.

The U.S. State Department said Andrew Pochter, of Chevy Chase, Md., was killed Friday in Alexandria during clashes between government supporters and opponents. His family said in a statement Saturday that he was stabbed by a protester while observing the demonstrations.

"He went to Egypt because he cared profoundly about the Middle East. He had studied in the region, loved the culture, and planned to live and work there in the pursuit of peace and understanding," the statement said.

The 21-year-old spent his spring semester studying in Amman, Jordan, as part of the AMIDEAST Education Abroad Program and was teaching in Egypt before returning in the fall to Kenyon College in Ohio. He majored in religious studies, was active in the campus Hillel House and was a member of the rugby club and an organizer for the Middle Eastern Students Association, the college said.

Meryn Chimes, a New York University student who said she was a friend of Pochter, recalled how he traveled to Morocco between high school and college and sent her excited letters about how much he loved it there.

"When he came back, he just had this passion for the Middle East," she said.

During his travels, she said, he would marvel at everything from the food to the people he encountered at marketplaces to the Colonial architecture of Alexandria. She said he told her how much he loved teaching Egyptian children and how they worked so hard to master English.

"He said he hoped they liked him as a teacher, which I'm sure they did," she said.

She said they last spoke a few days ago.

"He really wanted to broaden people's perspective, especially in America. He wanted people to see places the way he saw them," said Chimes, noting how her friend had spoken of potentially becoming a reporter.

"He saw the world in a way that I don't think anyone else did, and it was a really beautiful way."

Study results from Fudan University suggest beneficial role for Klotho in treating renal cell carcinoma

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Cancer Weekly -- Current study results on Cancer have been published. According to news reporting from Shanghai, People's Republic of China, by NewsRx journalists, research stated, "Klotho is an anti-aging protein predominantly expressed in renal tubular epithelial cells. Although Klotho was recently identified as a tumor suppressor gene in a variety of cancers, the potential role and molecular events for Klotho in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remain obscure."

The news correspondents obtained a quote from the research from Fudan University, "In the present study, immunohistochemical staining in tissue microarrays containing 125 RCC samples showed that intratumoral Klotho levels were negatively correlated with tumor size, TNM stage and nuclear grade. The overall survival rate of RCC patients with high Klotho expression was significantly higher than that of patients with low Klotho expression. Functional analysis after gain and loss of Klotho expression revealed that Klotho blunted epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cellular migration and invasion in RCC. Also, no alteration of a-2,6-sialidase activity was found after Klotho overexpression in RCC. The molecular signals for this phenomenon involved the Klotho-mediated inhibition of PI3K/Akt/GSK3??/Snail pathway. Importantly, compared to localized RCC tissues, advanced RCC tissues exhibited low Klotho expression accompanied with high pAkt and Snail expression. These results indicate Klotho acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting PI3K/Akt/GSK3??/Snail signaling, thus suppressing epithelial-mesenchymal transition and tumor migration and invasion during RCC progression."

According to the news reporters, the research concluded: "As a result, Klotho might be used as a potential therapy for advanced RCC."

TV binge-watching is a harmless addiction

TV

Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey star in "House of Cards," a favorite for binge-watching since all the episodes were put up on Netflix on the same day.

Ever sat down with a stack of DVDs or a queue of online TV episodes and watched till your eyes glazed over? If so, you've indulged in "binge-watching," a mostly harmless, and definitely enjoyable, addiction.

"Experts say TV binging is a lot like other pleasure activities like eating or drinking or sex," NBC's Kate Snow said on TODAY. "As you devour the next episode of your favorite show, your mind releases dopamine, the neurotransmitter that causes the feeling of pleasure ... while the forebrain provides checks and balances to guard against overindulgence."

Nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults with Internet access watch TV through subscription services like Netflix or Hulu or other on-demand sources, and 62 percent watch multiple episodes back-to-back.

"Content providers like Netflix are building business models around it, offering original series like 'House of Cards' only available on their service all at once," Snow notes.

Like anything, binge-watching can be abused. "Anything that causes pleasure is potentially abusable when matched up against the ability of your forebrain to regulate it," said Dr. Richard Rosenthal of St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York. But unlike truly addictive substances, binge-watching doesn't carry with it the negative consequences of other habits.

And if you invest in the right companies, it can be profitable as well. Stock for both Netflix and Dreamworks recently jumped following the announcement of a new partnership between the two for 300 hours of original programming, which guarantees to be ripe for binge watching, Snow said.

(AP) ? Less than 24 hours after California started issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples, lawyers for the sponsors of the state's gay marriage ban filed an emergency motion Saturday asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the weddings being performed in San Francisco.

Attorneys with the Arizona-based Alliance Defending Freedom claim in the petition that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals acted prematurely and unfairly on Friday when it allowed gay marriage to resume by lifting a hold that had been placed on same sex unions.

"The Ninth Circuit's June 28, 2013 Order purporting to dissolve the stay...is the latest in a long line of judicial irregularities that have unfairly thwarted Petitioners' defense of California's marriage amendment," the paperwork states. "Failing to correct the appellate court's actions threatens to undermine the public's confidence in its legal system."

The motion was filed as dozens of couples in jeans, shorts, white dresses and the occasional military uniform filled San Francisco City Hall on Saturday to obtain marriage licenses. On Friday, 81 same sex couples received marriage licenses.

Although a few clerk's offices around the state stayed open late on Friday, San Francisco, which is holding its annual gay pride celebration this weekend, was the only jurisdiction to hold weekend hours so that same sex couples could take advantage of their newly restored right, Clerk Karen Hong said.

A sign posted on the door of the office where a long line of couples waited to fill out applications listed the price for a license, a ceremony or both above the words "Equality=Priceless."

"We really wanted to make this happen," Hong said, adding that her whole staff and a group of volunteers came into work without having to be asked. "It's spontaneous, which is great in its own way."

The timing couldn't have been better for California National Guard Capt. Michael Potoczniak, 38, and his partner of 10 years, Todd Saunders, 47, of El Cerrito.

Potoczniak, who joined the Guard after the military's ban on openly gay service was repealed almost two years ago, was scheduled to fly out Sunday night for a month of basic training in Texas.

"I woke up this morning, shook him awake and said, 'Let's go,'" said Potoczniak, who chose to get married in his Army uniform. "It's something that people need to see because everyone is so used to uniforms at military weddings."

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Proposition 8's backers lacked standing to defend the 2008 law because California's governor and attorney general have declined to defend the ban.

Then on Friday, the 9th Circuit appeared to have removed the last obstacle to making same sex matrimony legal again in California when it removed its hold on a lower court's 2010 order directing state officials to stop enforcing the ban.

Within hours, same sex couples were seeking marriage licenses. The two couples who sued to overturn Proposition 8 were wed in San Francisco and Los Angeles Friday.

Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Austin Nimocks said on Saturday that the Supreme Court's consideration of the case isn't done because his clients still have 22 days to ask the justices to reconsider the 5-4 decision announced Wednesday.

Under Supreme Court rules, the losing side in a legal dispute has 25 days to request a rehearing. While such requests are almost never granted, the high court said that it wouldn't finalize its judgment in the case at least until after that waiting period elapsed.

The San Francisco-based appeals court had said when it imposed the stay that it would remain in place until the Supreme Court issued its final disposition, according to Nimocks.

"Everyone on all sides of the marriage debate should agree that the legal process must be followed," he said. "On Friday, the 9th Circuit acted contrary to its own order without explanation."

Many legal experts who had anticipated such a last-ditch effort by gay marriage opponents said it was unlikely to succeed because the 9th Circuit has independent authority over its own orders ? in this case, its 2010 stay.

While the ban's backers can still ask the Supreme Court for a rehearing, the 25-day waiting period is not binding on lower federal courts, Vikram Amar, a constitutional law professor with the University of California, Davis law school, said.

"As a matter of practice, most lower federal courts wait to act," Amar said. "But there is nothing that limits them from acting sooner. It was within the 9th Circuit's power to do what it did."

Also waiting to wed Saturday were Scott Kehoe, 34, and his fiance, Aurelien Bricker, 24. After finding out on Facebook that the city was issuing same sex marriage licenses Friday, the San Francisco couple rushed out to Tiffany's to buy wedding rings.

"We were afraid of further legal challenges in the state," Kehoe said.

The city, home to both a federal trial court that struck down Proposition 8 as unconstitutional and the 9th Circuit, has been the epicenter of the state's gay marriage movement since then-Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered his administration in February 2004 to issue licenses to gay couples in defiance of state law.

A little more than four years later, the California Supreme Court, which is also based in San Francisco, struck down the state's one-man, one-woman marriage laws.

City Hall was the scene of many more marriages in the 4 1/2 months before a coalition of religious conservative groups successfully campaigned for the November 2008 passage of Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to outlaw same sex marriages.

Standing amid the beaming couples on Saturday, John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney of the advocacy group Marriage Equality USA looked like proud fathers. The men have been together 26 years, got married in February 2004, had their union invalidated six months later and then became one of the 18,000 couples estimated to have tied the knot in California before Proposition 8 was enacted.

"I don't think getting a license means as much to anyone who hasn't worked so long for it and fought so hard for it," Gaffney said. "It's been a very long engagement."

Where Have All The Dad's Departed To and What is the Cost ...

Dads feature

In a new study from the US Census Bureau, the percent of children born to unmarried women hit nearly 37 percent in the U. S., up from about 31 percent in 2005. The number of children living apart from their fathers has more than doubled in the last fifty years, from 11 percent in 1960 to 27 percent in 2010. According to the Pew Research Center analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), more than one-in-four fathers with children 18 or younger do not live with their child(ren).

With this statistic comes a myriad of problems afflicting individuals and communities alike. Single parenthood is a large predictor of poverty, simply because it costs less to raise a child in a two parent home. The cost of raising children under the age of eight for single parent families ranged from $12,450 to $14,250 with many on public assistance. The cost of raising a child in a two-family home is approximately half this cost.

dad1The absence of significant fatherhood involvement and engagement can have a profound effect on the quality and quantity of early experiences for a child that can affect lifelong disparities in health and wellness and impact community dollars. The brain architecture has been proven to be a foundation for overall learning, development, behavior, and health of a child. Research shows increased neural development of children in nurturing, positive, two-parent supported environments. Ensuring children have positive experiences early in life is less costly than later remediation programs for delinquency, drugs, alcohol, and counseling. Community and family support for fatherhood generates a strong return on investment economically and supports the reduction of cost in health disparities for tomorrow?s adults.

We asked a panel of people to tell us what they think fathers offer, and here are some key thoughts:

  • Fathers define a sense of community, steering interest in community events, outdoors, sports or athletics. Children tend to emulate parents in their own family and their involvement in community later on in life which can result in fewer coaches, less offered activities, and less emphasis on active participation in community events.
  • Fathers provide structure and resources to support their children that lasts a lifetime.
  • Fathers define roles, relationships, and boundaries much different than mothers do.
  • Fathers have a direct impact on the morals of children and community that will affect our future.
  • Fathers often teach children how to behave by following through.
  • Fathers are a different type of role model for our youth than mothers are.

Is the loss of fatherhood involvement one of the evident tragedies of our times? Have we seriously overlooked the huge impact involved fathers have on their children? Have we chosen to focus on a tug of war in what rights they have, simply because they offer different things than women offer to their children? Prejudice from courts to maternal grandparents have kept many fathers from successfully engaging with their child. As early as birth, a child bonds to both their parents in equal ways. If a father misses early opportunities to be with their child during this stage, a child may become fussy and reject attempts to connect, putting fathers who await long court battles at a very big disadvantage resulting in a loss for both father and child.

It seems we expect fathers to be ?doers? when a child is born rather than just take some time to be with their baby. Those facing unplanned pregnancy may not be in a place to be ?doers,? especially if it is a young father. Society benefits if we help fathers nourish successful involvement with their child from the start in the same way we do for our young mothers. If we afford a mother community supports and education, and allow them to take the necessary time to spend with their child during the adjustment to motherhood, we should offer men the same until some life skills and structures begin to develop.

dad3Who is to say a young man should be rejected because he is not ready to be the full bread winner at the moment of an unplanned pregnancy. His lost opportunities to bond and attach to his child increases the risk of not staying engaged in his child?s life and negatively impacts the child?s development. Men are not always going to be anything more than ?manly? raising their child, and research shows this is biologically evident for optimal human development when both a man and a woman have a lifelong successful relationship with a child. Even the way that a man handles an infant helps that child?s neurodevelopment. It?s in the great design to have the influence of a father or father figure and a mother or mother figure. Let?s make every effort to support the success of our fathers and not banish them from parenthood or chase them away with messages on unsuccessful ?fatherdom? because of immaturity, personal vendettas, or inability to know what to do.

Many communities across the United States have begun to recognize the value of successful fatherhood and have advocated and supported efforts to increase fatherhood engagement. The National Fatherhood Initiative offers a directory for cities and state fatherhood programs and can be found at: www.fatherhood.org/directory.

  • UNLV's Anthony Marshall, Texas guard Myck Kabongo and Memphis high-flyer D.J. Stephens will play for the Miami Heat. Stephens' 46-inch vertical leap at this spring's combine was the highest ever recorded at the pre-draft event, while Kabongo was generally considered a second-round talent.
  • Creighton big man Gregory Echenique will join the Toronto Raptors.
  • Matt Lojeski, a former Hawaii guard who last played in Belgium, will play for the New Orleans Pelicans.
  • Illinois guard Brandon Paul will play for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
  • BYU forward Brandon Davies will join the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Southern Miss guard Dwayne Davis will play for the Golden State Warriors, according to Patrick McGee of the Sun Herald.
  • Duke guard Seth Curry received offers from a number of teams, but he doesn't expect to be healthy enough to play this summer after April shin surgery.

UBS commits to home market with Zurich HQ revamp

By Katharina Bart

ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS will spend more than 100 million Swiss francs ($105.42 million) on a facelift of its Zurich headquarters, hoping to turn the building into a buzzing retail area on one of Europe's most exclusive shopping streets.

The Swiss bank is splashing out as other European banks are tightening their belts on real estate, as they cut bloated balance sheets, slash jobs and reconsider the cost of occupying prime locations amid a downturn in business.

On Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse, rental space commands roughly 9,000 Swiss francs ($9,500) per square meter, according to estimates compiled by real estate firm Wuest & Partner, making it among Europe's most expensive property.

Many Swiss private banks, which have offices in the area, see that as money well spent as they target the same clientele shopping at luxury vendors such as Gucci and Prada which fill Bahnhofstrasse.

Zurich architects EM2N have been commissioned to gut UBS's stone-pillared headquarters, built in 1916, and adapt the buildings immediately surrounding it for rent as shops and cafes, in a project expected to last more than two years.

The grand entrance at No. 45 Bahnhofstrasse, where tellers serve clients in a marble-lined hall, is listed so will only undergo a minimal revamp when work begins in 2015.

"We are setting an attractive urban accent in the middle of Zurich and we see this as a further commitment to our home market," UBS's operating chief Ulrich Koerner said in a statement.

UBS is at pains to play up its Swiss roots after abandoning riskier parts of its investment bank, which has produced a series of scandals including a $1.5 billion penalty for manipulating Libor and other benchmark interest rates.

During the renovation, roughly 650 UBS bankers including Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti will move from the Bahnhofstrasse site, between luxury boutiques Chanel and Cartier, to other office space the Swiss bank owns nearby.

Industry heavyweights UBS, Credit Suisse and Julius Baer dominate Bahnhofstrasse.

Swiss private bank Clariden Leu, with roots back to 1755, has been the highest profile bank to disappear from Bahnhofstrasse, after the brand disappeared when the bank was integrated into Credit Suisse, its parent.

Many employees at UBS headquarters will be moved into Europaallee, a new development near Zurich's train station which seeks to revitalize the city's seedier area with bars, shops and office space. ($1 = 0.9486 Swiss francs)

?I Was in a Very Deep Foxhole?

Mark Kirk was elected to the Senate in 2010, but he?s not your ordinary Republican freshman. First, he?s a moderate from the Chicago suburbs. And he was probably best known for taking Barack Obama?s seat until 2012, when the former intelligence officer in the Naval Reserves suffered a stroke at just 52. It spared his mind but hindered his mobility. He returned to the Senate in January, slowly walking up the 45 steps of the Capitol to applause from his colleagues. He spoke with National Journal about his recovery, Chicago?s mayor, and the National Security Agency mess. Edited excerpts follow.

NJ How are you feeling?

KIRK Better and better. I would say rehab works.

NJ?How much time are you spending on rehab at this point?

KIRK?I go to the Senate gym each day. I also go to Walter Reed. A lot of my fellow patients are missing limbs. You?re having a tough day and you look over at a soldier who might be missing a leg or two arms, and he is doing great. And you think to yourself, ?There is nothing challenging me like what is challenging him.?

NJ?Everyone was marveling when you came back to the Senate and made it up those stairs.

KIRK?They all told me that was the first big bipartisan moment that had happened in a while. That?s something really to celebrate.

NJ?Is it harder to do your job? And does it still hold your interest to do things like dial around for fundraising or haggle over amendments?

KIRK?What I would say is that the Senate is appropriately designed to accommodate older men [laughter], and so I?m in pretty good shape. The whole thing that drives me is public service.

NJ?Has this experience changed how you see health care?

KIRK?My concern is what happens if you have a stroke and you?re not in the U.S. Senate and you have no insurance and no income. That?s the question that I have been asking, and the reality is that if you?re on Illinois Medicaid and are a stroke survivor, you will get just five visits to the rehab specialist. That?s it. Senator [Tim] Johnson [D-S.D.] and I are working on a stroke agenda.

NJ?You underwent brain surgeries. From what I?ve read it was a spiritual journey.

KIRK?I spent a lot of time in the ICU on the edge of oblivion and really did think a lot of death and the process of being dead. They say there are no atheists in foxholes, and I was in a very deep foxhole.

NJ?I heard you had visions of angels, with New York accents, not Chicago ones.

KIRK?That?s right. Sometimes I?d look over and see figures talking about me. They had a pretty good sense of humor.

NJ?You were in military intelligence. From what you know about these NSA programs, do you have real concerns?

KIRK?I do. It?s bad intelligence work to be focusing in on 121 million Americans who aren?t doing anything particularly terrorist-related.

NJ?Did the NSA go in this direction on its own, or was it just doing what Congress authorized?

KIRK?Just because you brief eight people in a windowless room doesn?t mean that Congress supports you. Congress supports you through open debate and the involvement of the American people through the 24-hour news cycle.

NJ?It seems like we?re in a world now where a Bradley Manning or an Edward Snowden has so much more access than an intel officer might have had 20 years ago.

KIRK?We have a classified Internet on the backside of the intelligence community, and if you?re on that system, then a Bradley Manning can download the presidential book of secrets like in the movie [National Treasure].

NJ?How do you think Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is doing?

KIRK?Well. Really well. I?ve only known him since he was elected to the House. And I think he?s doing a very good job.

NJ?They say moderate Republicans are an endangered species. What would you like to see your party do in the coming years?

KIRK?We?ve been called extinct so many times that it turns out not to be true.

NJ?But what about the national party?

KIRK?What often happens is that people or politicians get out of date, and that?s my worry about the Republican Party. It apparently doesn?t understand how multicolored and how multicultural our country has become.

NJ?You?re interested in running again?

KIRK?Yes.

America's deadliest soldier? Dillard Johnson says he never made that claim.

Yesterday I wrote about Dillard Johnson's new book "Carnivore," published by the News Corporation's HarperCollins and heavily promoted by News Corporation outlets like the New York Post and Fox News.

The promotional effort around the book has carried a hard-to-believe, almost impossible claim: that Johnson had 2,746 "confirmed" enemy kills over the course of two tours in Iraq. His first tour came during the 2003 invasion and the second for roughly 12 months starting in February 2005. The claimed kills, which first surfaced in NewsCorp's New York Post on Monday ("With 2,746 confirmed kills, Sgt. 1st Class Dillard Johnson is the deadliest American soldier on record ? and maybe the most humble"), was then repeated on a number of Fox News programs this week and mirrored around the Internet.

Similar claims are made in HarperCollins' publicity for the book ("He is recognized by the Pentagon to have accounted for more than 2,000 enemy killed in action," says the book jacket; "Credited with more than 2,600 enemy KIA, he is perhaps the most lethal ground soldier in U.S. history," says the blurb the publisher supplied to Amazon; the book cover calls him "One of the deadliest American soldiers of all time.")

Mr. Johnson says there's one problem: It isn't true.

RECOMMENDED: America's deadliest soldier or stolen valor?

He says the book doesn't contain that claim, that he never claimed to have killed 2,746 enemy fighters in Iraq, and that he didn't kill that many people in Iraq. He says a combination of innocent mistakes by others and a desire by HarperCollins and his co-author to promote the book have led to the impression he's making claims that he hasn't made. He says a personal and informal total of likely enemy fighters killed during engagements in the Iraq invasion has been attributed to him, when in fact the total includes shooting from the Bradley he commanded as well as shots fired from Bradleys around him and commanded by others ? his wingmen.

"Am I one of the deadliest American soldiers of all time? Probably not," says Johnson. "Do I think I did a lot of damage with my vehicle and stuff, with me being decisive? Yeah, absolutely."

These and other claims have drawn angry denunciations from a large number of soldiers who served with him in Iraq, who say he played an important role in their effort but did not come close to what's been written about him in the press.

Johnson says he agrees, and says the attribution of so many dead to him personally traces back to a 2004 Pentagon history of the invasion, On Point: The United States Army in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was interviewed for the book and says it's been wildly misinterpreted, especially since the chapter he features in was excerpted by Soldier of Fortune magazine, with editorial changes made by someone there that exaggerated his personal role in the fighting.

His assertion of 121 "confirmed" sniper kills made in his book has also drawn howls of derision. Johnson is not trained as a sniper and was not equipped with a sniper rifle. He says his personal tally of 121 enemy killed during his second tour is correct, but that "I didn?t use a sniper rifle, I am not a sniper. Nowhere in the book does it say that I?m a sniper. It?s in the jacket, again, but I didn?t write that." He told me that all these kills were with M4 and M14 rifles.

He told Fox New's Laura Ingraham on the O'Reilly Factor ? the evening after an appearance on Fox & Friends that morning that infuriated many veterans, and prompted angry emails from some former comrades ? that the 121 kills involved "the M14 and my M4 personal rifle and some 203 ones." A 203 is a single shot grenade launcher and attributing specific deaths to a grenade launched over distance is both difficult and definitely not a form of "sniping."

Johnson explains that the choice of "sniper" in the book was for ease of understanding for the general civilian public. "When you look inside the cover and see the talk about the 121 confirmed sniper kills [that's because] most civilians don?t know what a designated marksman is," he says. He said his platoon didn't have many trained marskmen and that since he was a naturally good shot, he took on those kinds of duties to protect himself and his men.

Some of Johnson's stories have shifted over time.

He told Ms. Ingraham this week that the long shot, which he says in that interview was 821 yards, "was sort of a sniper battle from a rooftop and I got this guy. It took me 15 shots. He was a better shot than me. I just had better equipment and he was missing all around me and I basically just got lucky." But here's what Stars and Stripes reported him as saying about the incident on Dec. 20, 2005:

?I used my laser rangefinder to give me the distance to the enemy location, it was 852 meters exactly, a long shot,? Johnson said then, according to a 2nd Brigade Combat Team press release carried by the newspaper. He reported there were two insurgents there and that they were firing towards his rooftop position. ?I engaged one enemy shooter with my own rifle. My first round fell short but it must have scared him because he stood up to run away. The next round I fired, hit him and he went down,? Johnson said.

On his O'Reilly appearance, Johnson corrected his host when she attributed 2,746 kills in Iraq to him personally. He says he wished he'd done that in the earlier Fox & Friends interview but that he was only on for about three minutes, and as it was his first television appearance, he was a little flustered.

"I was trying to get that in on Fox & Friends, but didn?t have time. Did on O?Reilly with Laura Ingraham," he tells me. He told Ingraham:

"As far as the kills go ... I?m not really proud of those numbers being out there, it was part of the battle damage assessment that we did. My gunner actually did, you know, most of those or over half of those in the vehicle there and I was just present on the vehicle ... which I was the commander of."

Soldiers in general don't like to keep body counts, and while they may be proud of killing enemies in engagements, keeping their buddies safe, and accomplishing their missions, bragging about kill numbers is generally seen as uncouth, if not a downright creepy. Johnson agrees with that, and says there's no intent to brag about killing. Rather, he says, he kept track of enemy dead by counting rifles on the battlefield after engagements (on the reasoning that "one rifle equals one man") as a way to keep senior officers as informed as possible about the course of the war.

Johnson was kind enough to speak to me for about two hours last night. I'm currently sifting through my long notes of my conversation with him, and will revisit the story after I read his book myself this evening.

Ford, Chrysler counter GM with new V6 pickups for 2014

By Bernie Woodall

DETROIT (Reuters) - The battle in six-cylinder pickups takes an interesting twist this fall with the launch of the 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor and the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.

Both trucks feature turbocharged V6 engines, but take different approaches to reach different segments of the full-size pickup audience.

The new Ford and Ram entries - one built for speed, the other for high mileage and heavy loads - are hitting the U.S. market as General Motors Co's recently redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups are beginning to reach U.S. dealers in significant numbers.

Chrysler Group LLC hopes to divert some attention from the new GM trucks with its new 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the industry's first light-duty diesel-powered pickup.

Ford Motor Co is counterpunching with the 2014 Tremor, the industry's quickest and most powerful six-cylinder pickup.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel features a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel from Italy's VM Motori, a longtime supplier to Chrysler and an affiliate of the U.S. automaker's corporate parent Fiat SpA .

Fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the EcoDiesel delivers 240 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque. Chrysler said the diesel version of the Ram 1500 will deliver better than 25 miles per gallon in highway driving.

Ford's Tremor, a short-wheelbase version of the regular-cab F-150, gets the company's 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, a turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline V6 rated at 365 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet. A special "performance" axle helps the Tremor accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in about 6.5 seconds. EPA highway fuel economy is 22 miles per gallon.

In comparison, GM's 2014 Silverado and Sierra get a standard 4.3-liter gasoline V6 that makes 285 horsepower and 305 pounds-feet, and has an EPA highway rating of 24 mpg.

The 2014 Ram 1500 with a standard 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine will have a base price of $25,295, and the "EcoDiesel" option will be $2,850 more, Chrysler said Friday at the trucks' introduction.

Ford has not released prices on the 2014 F-150 trucks, but said Thursday the Tremor would be more expensive than the standard F-150 V6 model.

Chevrolet has not priced the regular-cab 2014 Silverado V6, which goes on sale later this summer.

The three Detroit-based automakers dominate the full-size pickup truck market, which continues to heat up and is easily outpacing sales for cars, crossovers and SUVs. While total U.S. industry sales were up 7.3 percent through May, sales of big trucks jumped 21.2 percent.

At all three of those automakers, the light-duty pickup trucks are the company's best sellers.

In May, sales of the Ford F-Series rose 31 percent, Chevrolet Silverado sales rose 25 percent and Chrysler's Ram truck sales rose 22 percent.

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer's new SB-PS23W is a soundbar the way most people want it: A simple, relatively inexpensive way to make a television sound louder. In that way, it's cut from the same cloth as the fantastic AirPlay speakers the company made last year (actually, they've got the some LA-based designer). It wasn't the first AirPlay speaker, but its design made it a winner.

From what we just heard this $400 soundbar has a lot of the same potential for the basic soundbar market. The six-speaker array sits in a a handsome wooden enclosure that's larger than most. While that might not necessarily mesh with the "invisible" aesthetic most soundbars are going for, it gives the music some space to resonate. (The included wireless sub helps fill out the bottom-end nicely as well.) The sound of sweet guitars resonating in wood?just the way it should be.

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

How do movies sound? Well, see now, that's the thing?Pioneer wasn't demoing movies because the system is designed for stereo. That means you're not getting any fancy surround sound emulation. Pioneer reps said we're "three years away" from being able to do surround sound well from a soundbar. That's definitely not true, but at a $300 price point?surrrrre.

But the trade of of is simplicity and price. This new sound bar only takes two inputs?optical digital and RCA. So you'll need a separate hub?a TV will do!?to handle all your HDMI inputs.

Usual first impression disclaimer applies: I listened to this thing for a few minutes only, so we'll have to wait and see how it holds up against the cheap soundbars we reviewed last year.

Kate Shops for Antiques During Percy Wedding - From Berkshire to ...

I know I promised this post yesterday, but the last 48 hours were just a little too busy. But, now we are getting to it... Kate did miss the society wedding of the year, but although she couldn't make the 300 mile journey to Northumberland, she did get out and about locally as she perused antique shops on Saturday.

She was at Youlls Antiques in Hungerford, Berkshire, very close to her family's home. ?Perhaps she was shopping for KP, or maybe looking for a unique piece to gift her parents for their anniversary? ?Kate was wearing black skinnies, ballet flats, and was covered up in a loose, open trench coat. ?Her hair stole the show, as usual, reminding us all why it is constantly rated one of the top envies of women the world over. Even on a Saturday shopping trip it looks stunning. ?

I wanted to quickly tell you several interesting rumors I have read recently. The first was a bookie who slashed the odds on "Mary" as a possibility for Baby Cambridge because a well dressed man came from Ascot and placed a huge bet on?Mary. A spokesman in the article said:

"The mystery punter came into one of our shops in west London, in full Ascot fig with a top hat and tails. ?100 is a huge bet for this market, where the average bet just ?3 so we are a little nervous that a member of the party at Royal Ascot has let the possible name slip,"

I am going to break my usual habit of being very, very skeptical and say that this one kind of piqued my interest. First of all, the guy has a point, although with the vino flowing at Ascot it could be as likely that this was a bet on a bet! "Hey, see if you can spike speculation with an absurdly large bet!" ?Who knows, nevertheless, Mary is a Windsor family name, and we all expect Wills and Kate to choose with tradition in mind. ?Lastly, let's be honest, William and Kate are HUGE Downton Abbey fans. Who doesn't love Mary?? ?

That was interesting rumor number one. Number two is the possibility that Kate and William may have lightly exaggerated the due date to give themselves some privacy and breathing room. Supposedly, Diana did something similar when she announced a July birth and delivered William in June. ?This seems less likely to me, but it would explain why she won't travel. ?We shall see soon enough!

The Daily Mail just published an old photo of Wills and Kate. They say it was taken a month ago, but that just can't be right given how advanced (or I should say not advanced) she looks. Get the whole scoop at the DM here.?

Anyway, a little Pippa news, perchance? ?Yes please. ?Wait, let's actually do a quick wedding recap, since so many of our favorites were present.

The bride looked like a princess, which was appropriate to my mind given her family's prominence. They are a baby royal family in their town. ?Chelsy was looking lovely as the Maid of Honor, and totally appropriate. If every time a woman wears a flattering dress she is skewered like Pippa at the Royal Wedding, we may be dealing with oversexed viewers, not an oversexed woman.?

Isn't this handsome prince looking cheerful?

Harry and Cressida were also looking great. ?We have learned one thing about Cressida. She loves her maxi dresses...and sparkles...and flowers. This is the second wedding she has opted for floor length where most went structured. I am a fan of the maxi dress myself, so I can't complain that she dances to the beat of her own drum.

That being said, the duo were snapped returning to London and all I can say is...what is she wearing????

Back to our favorite royal sister-in-law-- Pippa is hit and miss for these weddings. For me, this was a miss. I don't like the uneven peplum and I hate the busy print. It's like someone threw paint at the fabric, it is bad. The hat was structured, so points for that, but those tall spikes remind me of Maleficent, the evil step-mother of Sleeping Beauty. Not good. ?It wasn't ideal, but I have seen worse, and she was glowingly lovely--that will take you a ways. :)

She didn't miss a beat, and was photographed back in London schlepping groceries home from Waitrose. Perhaps, she was pulling something together for her column? I like this! ?Great color for her skin tone, feminine and professional styling--she looks tired, but she looks good.

We are not done, though! Despite the fact that her sister is shunning the spotlight as she waits out the last few weeks of her pregnancy, Pippa dropped into the Royal Box at Wimbledon with her brother James to take in some tennis. ?Both looked appropriately dapper. Pippa was looking much better this year, (after yet another overly busy peplum disaster from last year) and seemed, if I may say so, to be channeling just a hint of her sister's tennis style.?

The jacket over the dress is reminding me of Kate's beautiful ensemble last year when the sisters watched the final game. ?

Maybe you are thinking well, Pippa struck out at the wedding, and maybe you didn't love the peachy suit dress, and maybe you weren't that keen on the Wimbledon blue, but I now present to you Pip's pi?ce de r?sistance. This was a week or so ago, at Ascot, but it was marvelous from tip to toe. I gasped when I saw the pictures. Light and airy, delicate colors, absolutely perfect hat--it was a true triumph:

Well done Pippa Middleton, well done.?

Ok, kids, I have now shared the majority of my royal musings for the moment. ?Get more photos of Kate shopping at PopSugar by clicking here and let's keep an eye out for more of Kate wandering the streets of Berkshire or maybe somewhere closer to Buckingham Palace... ;)

Leef's Bridge USB flash drive lets you share files between your smartphone and computer

DNP Leef USB

Sharing files between devices using the cloud is fine, but California firm Leef Technology believes it has a more direct approach: a USB key. Aptly named Bridge, the flash drive lets you copy files from any Android 4.0 or higher device with a micro-USB connector, then transfer them to your Mac or PC by popping out the larger end. You can nab the double-ended peripheral in either 16GB ($18) or 32GB ($28) from Amazon or Leef's website (at the source), and a 64GB GB version will be out in July. Who knows -- maybe that'll finally put an end to the cat video and selfie clutter on your cloud service.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? After delays, Samsung Electronics Co. rolled out Thursday a curved TV that uses an advanced display called OLED.

The 55-inch TV will sell for 15 million won ($13,000) in South Korea, more than five times the cost of LCD televisions of the same size.

But Kim Hyunsuk, the executive vice president of Samsung's TV division, said the company is optimistic about demand for the high-end TV.

"OLED is about picture quality," Kim told reporters. "We are sure that we realized the perfect picture quality."

It remains to be seen if consumers will be willing to pay a premium for enhanced imagery. The TV industry has been struggling to excite interest with its latest technologies. In recent years, attempts to boost sales by introducing 3-D TVs and TVs that are connected to the Internet have failed to end the downturn in the TV industry.

Samsung is not the first to introduce a curved TV using OLED. In May, its rival LG Electronics Inc., the second-biggest TV maker, launched a 55-inch curved TV in South Korea.

LG's model, which also sells for 15 million won, is not sold outside South Korea.

LG spokesman Kenneth Hong said the company will ship curved OLED TVs to other countries in the near future.

Samsung will ship its curved OLED TVs to overseas markets starting July, Kim said. The company does not plan to manufacture flat OLED TVs this year, he said.

The concave display gives viewers a sense of being immersed in the images, according to Samsung.

Samsung and LG, which are the only TV makers in the world to begin commercial sales of OLED TVs, had promised to launch them in 2012 but delayed the launch to this year.

The two South Korean TV giants tout OLED, short for organic light-emitting diode, as the next-generation display technology that will eventually replace older displays. But mass producing OLED displays still faces many challenges, leading to high prices.

In addition to curved OLED TVs, Samsung launched two ultra-HD TVs, with about four times the resolution of regular high-definition TVs.
