How to Get Up to $1,000 in Hidden Credit Card Benefits

Ramit Sethi

How to Get Up to $1,000 in Hidden Credit Card BenefitsYour credit card provides over $1,000 of benefits you may not even know about. As a huge nerd, over the last few years I systematically tested each of these benefits to figure out what the best ones are.

Most cards have a standard list of credit card benefits, including:

  • Free concierge service for booking hard-to-get reservations, ordering last-minute flowers, and helping with travel planning
  • Automatic extended warranties so you can skip retail stores' offers
  • Roadside assistance and car-rental insurance

But there's another, lesser-known benefit that I think is the best benefit of all: purchase protection. Purchase protection means that if you buy something and it gets stolen or accidentally damaged, your credit card company will write you a check for up to $1,000.

Here's how I discovered this perk: I bought my first Mac laptop and a few days later, while working at a coffee shop, I accidentally spilled an entire cup of coffee right into the keyboard. Not good. After drying it out, I took it to a repair shop to get a quote on repair. Then, I called my credit card company and told them about the accident. They said, "No problem. Send us the estimate."

After I sent the estimate, they wrote me a check for $530. I then sold the laptop for parts on eBay for $661.65. Overall, with fees and expenses, I lost about $200 for a $1,300 laptop?not great, but not bad. Had I not made a critical mistake in sending the wrong paperwork, I actually would have broken totally even.

Your credit card offers these perks to anyone. They want you to use them. But few people know about them, and even fewer take advantage of them. By using even a few of these perks, you can save well over $1,000/year.

If you're curious about the full list of perks your credit card offers, I'm making the entire chapter of my New York Times best-selling book available for free for Lifehacker readers, where I cover exactly how to get the most out of your credit card. No opt-in required. Download the free chapter here.

Heavy workload awaits next pope; church in turmoil

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The moment Cardinal Albino Luciani learned his colleagues had elected him pope, he responded: "May God forgive you for what you've done." The remark, by the man who became Pope John Paul I, was seen as an expression of humility ? but also a commentary on the mammoth task ahead.

There is no job like that of pope. He is the CEO of a global enterprise, head of state, a moral voice in the world and, in the eyes of Roman Catholics, Christ's representative on earth.

And the man who emerges as pontiff from the conclave starting Tuesday has a particularly crushing to-do list.

Here are some of the challenges awaiting the next pope:

___

REFORM: The next pope will have to restore discipline to the scandal-plagued central administration of the church. Benedict XVI, the former pope, commissioned a report on the Vatican bureaucracy, or Curia, that will be shown only to his successor. Benedict's butler had leaked the pope's private papers revealing feuding, corruption and cronyism at the highest levels of administration. The secretive Vatican bank recently ousted a president for incompetence and is under pressure for greater financial transparency. Bishops in several countries say nonresponsive Vatican officials are hampering local churches. The Curia decides everything from bishop appointments and liturgy, to parish closings and discipline for abusive priests.

___

SEX ABUSE: The Vatican remains under pressure to reveal more about its past role in the church's failures to protect children worldwide. The issue erupted ahead of the conclave, when victims from the U.S., Chile and Mexico pressured cardinals to recuse themselves because they had shielded priests from prosecution. Benedict instructed bishops around the world to craft policies to keep abusers from the priesthood, but church leaders in some nations haven't yet complied. "There's still the victims," Chicago Cardinal Francis George said in a news conference last week. "The wound is still deep in their hearts, and as long as it's with them it will be with us. The pope has to keep this in mind."

___

EMPTY PEWS: Secularism has already taken a toll on churches in Europe and the U.S., where a growing number of people don't identify with a faith. The move away from organized religion is also hurting parishes in Latin America. Churches in Brazil and other predominantly Catholic countries in South America already had been losing members to the spirited worship found in independent Pentecostal movements. As the church loses members, it also loses influence in public life in many countries. Church opposition to same-sex marriage has been largely ineffective in the West. The next pope must be a missionary-in-chief, with the gravitas, charisma and personal holiness to bring Catholics back to church.

___

EMPTY PULPITS: Europe and North America need more priests. Clergy in developing countries need more resources. And everywhere, priests are struggling with the outsized burdens of the modern-day pastor. The job requires fundraising, personal counseling and an ability to uphold doctrine, often to Catholics who don't want to listen. The abuse crisis, meanwhile, casts a shadow on today's clergy, even though most known molestation cases occurred decades ago. In recent years, some priests have made their own proposals to strengthen their ranks. Clergy in heavily Catholic Austria in 2011 called for ordaining women and relaxing the celibacy requirement. Benedict rebuked them.

___

RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION: Catholics and other Christians live as religious minorities in many countries, including Syria, India and China, where they face discrimination, government interference and, in many cases, violence as they try to practice their faith. The issue is a rare one that unites religious leaders across faiths. The pope is considered a key voice in the fight. Some of the tougher conditions are in Muslim nations, which often ban and punish Christian evangelizing. Addressing the issue requires utmost diplomacy; a misstep can cost lives.

___

GLOBALIZATION: While the church is shrinking in the West, it's booming in Africa and Asia. The new pope will have to shift much of his attention to the challenges for these relatively new dioceses: a life-and-death fight against poverty; threats from radical Muslim movements; and maintaining Catholic orthodoxy while leaving room for local styles of worship.

___

OTHER FAITHS: The new pope will have to keep up friendships with a long list of other Christian groups and other religions, including Orthodox Christians, Anglicans and Jews. But his most pressing task will be navigating relations with Islam. The importance of the issue was made starkly clear in the fallout from Benedict's 2006 speech in Regensburg, Germany, in which he cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman." Benedict made many efforts to mend fences, including praying beside an imam that same year at the historic Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

___

UNITY: The next pontiff inherits a church divided over the role of lay people and women, on doctrine and social justice teaching ? even on what is required to be considered Catholic. In Benedict's final audience with cardinals, he urged them to work "like an orchestra" where "agreement and harmony" can be reached despite diversity. He could have been talking to the whole church.

Tape a Picture of a Face to Your Webcam to Become More Comfortable on VideoTape a Picture of a Face to Your Webcam to Become More Comfortable on Video Do you tend to freeze up or get nervous when you're speaking to the webcam? One simple trick that might help you become more comfortable on screen is to use a picture of a person (drawn or a photograph) and place it in front of the camera?with a cutout for the camera eye, of course.

That's it. As blogger Randy Wilson explains in his video above, instead of the strangeness of talking to a camera eye when you're in a video chat or recording yourself, you'll have a face to talk to. It'll also help you focus on looking into the camera directly when you speak.

Borderland Beat: New commander takes command of Mexican 10th ...

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A press release by the new commander of the Mexican 10th Military zone, published in the online edition of yancuic.com, said that people near the La Laguna region can expect military checkpoints in the region.

Thursday, General de Brigada Georges Andre Van Lissum Foullon took command of the? 10th Military Zone which headquarters are located in Durango city.? The new appointment replaces General de Brigada? Jose de Jesus Hernandez Rivera, who was appointed commander of Operativo Laguna, the new security operation began late last month.

In terms of the type of commander the newly inaugurated president Enrique Pena Nieto wants as he prepares to stand his military down from security duties in Mexico's drug war, General Lissum Foullon is as good as it gets.

According to Mexican news sources, General Lissum Foullon was born in Mexico City on May 15, 1956, and joined the Mexican Army September 1st, 1971.? He formerly held command of the Mexican 2nd Motorized Cavalry Regiment in Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas.? Among his other duties during that time he had conducted a weapons buyback program in the city that year.

General Lissum Foullon was promoted to General de Brigada in November 2010, and was appointed command of the Mexican 4th Military Zone based in Hermosillo, Sonora in 2011.

General Lisson Fullon was also military attache in Spain, a prerequisite for top military commands in the Mexican Army.

The general held command during the Tubutama, Sonora gunfight which killed 24 gang members in July of 2010.? Two months after the end of that bloody dual, he commented the local gang activity in his zone of operations was unlike other areas in Mexico. He commented that, "...security systems, the state and municipalities, have been working properly and that's one of the parameters that we can see."? The report began by saying southern Sonora state was one of the safest in Mexico.

During his tenure as commander of the 4th Military Zone he appeared to be the go-to guy for local news about the military, never at a loss to tout the activities and achievements of his command.?

Mindful of the civilian component of his duties the General was also quoted in a Sonora state newspaper as saying that education was the key to fighting drug trafficking, saying the rural areas are vulnerable, but adding that federal and state support for those area have improved.

But for the gun battles in Tubutama, the area of operation of the 4th Military Zone is basically a backwater.? His new command encompasses most of Durango state including the capital city of Durango as well as the Durango side of La Laguna, currently a hard case for security and one of the most violent regions in Mexico.

His holding command of the 4th Military Zone? two years, apparently his first Military Zone command since making General de Brigada, speaks well of his command since Mexican Army general staff do not appear to like trouble and prefers to keep good commanders in place to train troops.

General Lissum Foullon will have his work cut out for him as the Operativo Laguna security program gets into place.? At the moment, Mexican press is reporting that Mexican Army units will continue to cross attach with local and state police units to improve control and cross training in La Laguna.

Xi3 starts Piston pre-orders: buy an early Steambox for under $1,000

Xi3 starts Piston preorders buy a protoSteambox for under $1,000

While Xi3's Piston may only be a Steambox through its software optimization, that still leaves us with a milestone on our hands now that the system is available for pre-orders: it's the first Valve-blessed PC on sale. If you're willing to set aside just under $1,000 ($900 during SXSW), you can claim a Big Picture-friendly mini PC with an embedded, 3.2GHz version of AMD's quad-core A10 in addition to 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. There's no mention of the conventional spinning storage referenced at CES. Expansion is limited to larger-capacity SSDs, although that's not surprising when the entire computer is smaller than a GeForce GTX Titan. The real jolt will be the launch timing. Xi3 won't have Pistons shipping until around the holidays, which could leave some of us hunting for less-than-official (if considerably larger) substitutes for the full Steam experience.

Bridging the partisan divide: VEP's chief of staff is 'Mr. Fix-It'

Bruce Reed, chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, has a reputation for getting along with both parties, and often plays a a key role in pushing the Obama administration's agenda.

By Josh Lederman,?Associated Press / March 9, 2013

Vice President Joe Biden's Chief of Staff Bruce Reed has lunch with President Barack Obama in Washington in August 2011. Friends and colleagues of Reed call him understated, self-effacing, non-threatening, even refreshingly old-fashioned.

Don't let these cool descriptors from friends and colleagues fool you: As the vice president's chief of staff, Bruce Reed plays Mr. Fix-It, guiding Joe Biden's role as a driving force behind the Obama administration's agenda.

With the White House wrestling Congress over gun control and tax-and-spending priorities, Reed's deep ties to the Oval Office and reputation for getting along with both parties make him a central character in some of Washington's biggest political battles.

Those who know Reed say his low-key style and consensus-oriented approach to deal-making are the keys to how he's managed time and again to bridge an ever-widening gap between Democrats and Republicans ? even when it rankles partisan Democrats who see concessions to the GOP as selling out.

"It gets characterized from an ideological perspective, meaning centrist vs. leftist. Bruce would probably see it more as, 'Are you a reformer and willing to make changes to accomplish the same goals?'" said Chicago mayor and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who co-wrote a policy book with Reed after they served together in the Clinton administration.

It's a trait that meshes well with the pragmatic, do-what-you-can approach to governing of President Barack Obama's administration. Reed's former and current colleagues say his method is also in sync with Biden's freewheeling but driven personality.

Once considered a potential liability to Obama, Biden has evolved into a serious heavy hitter whose broad portfolio of issues is never far removed from the president's top priorities. It was Biden, not Obama, who finally cut the New Year's deal with the Senate that averted the so-called fiscal cliff. White House officials credit Reed, who turns 53 this month, with steering Biden away from political pitfalls, helping him gauge which battles to fight and just how far to push.

But Reed's influence extends far beyond the vice president's quarters and deep into the West Wing. He's considered a full-fledged member of the economic team, joining the treasury secretary and others when the National Economic Council meets. Last year, he was tapped by Obama's then-chief of staff, Bill Daley, to help coordinate the State of the Union address. When Biden negotiates with Republicans in Congress, Reed is often the only other person on the phone.

Benito Juarez airport (MEX) serving Mexico City is modern and efficient. There are two terminals linked by a monorail that can only be used by passengers who have a ticket, boarding pass or eticket ref number. Others need to take a bus or taxi : it is too far to walk. There are special red buses that takes you from T1 to T2 for just 5 pesos (50 cents usd) each way

The newer Terminal 2 is used by Aeromexico and (mostly) its partners in the SkyTeam alliance. Terminal 1 has sections for both international and domestic flights.

International visitors will be given an arrivals card (FMT) and a customs form on board their flight. Once in the terminal, go to the correct immigration area. There are two separate areas: one for arrivals from North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia, and the other for arrivals from the Caribbean and Latin America. Present your FMT with your passport. Be sure to hang on to the portion of the FMT the officer returns to you as you will need to present this on departure and will be fined if you don't have it. Once you have collected your bags, hand over your customs form and then place your bags in the X-Ray machine and press the button indicated: a green light means you can go straight through to the arrivals hall, a red light will entail a visual inspection of your bags. In the arrivals hall, there are plenty of ATMs issuing pesos cash. In Terminal 1, baggage carts are free and cannot be taken past the Arrivals Hall, but there are plenty of porters available. In Terminal 2, there is a nominal fee for a baggage cart and it can be taken to the taxi rank or parking lot. If you are continuing on to another destination in Mexico on the same carrier you generally do not need to recheck your luggage as you would in the U.S. However, it would be well to double check with your airlineI

The airport has all the usual facilities, including left luggage lockers. If you are heading in to Mexico City itself, the recommended, and safest, way is to prebook your taxi before arriving at the airport. Most prepaid taxis will cost the same online and once you be provided with arrival instructions once you have paid and received your booking confirmation. Do NOT accept a ride from any of the touts who might be hanging around the terminal, or attempt to take a non official taxi. As a more expensive alternative to a taxi, your hotel can generally send a car to the airport to collect you.

As a general rule getting a taxi from Mexico Airport can be a harrowing experience. If you have the time before you leave it is worth searching online and prebooking your taxi prior to arriving, some companies, such as Mexico Airport Transfers, have an option to book and pay from the comfort of your armchair. Often the cost is not a lot more than getting a taxi once you're at the airport, and the safety and peace of mind makes it worthwhile.

There is a subway/metro station at Terminal 1. Turn left outside the terminal building and walk to the end near the main road and then down the steps. This is only advised if you are confident in Spanish and have minimal baggage. The flat fare is 3 pesos. A more comfortable and still inexpensive route into the centro histrico is on the metrobus, line 4. This runs from both terminals. The fare is 30 pesos, but you have to pay an additional 10 pesos for the pre-paid smart card. This card can be used on all the metrobus lines and on some metro routes as well. The buses have luggage space and a cop on board and video surveillance.

There are direct buses from the airport to Puebla, Quertaro, Toluca, Cuernavaca Tlaxcala, Pachuca and Cordoba. Go here for timetables and prices. They run every 30 to 40 minutes until mid/late evening. There is no need to pre-purchase tickets. Look for the signs saying Transporte Forano/Terrestre. In T1, turn left in the arrivals hall and then go up the ramp to the next level near Gate 6. Walk straight in front of you until you see a footbridge. The ticket desks are across this bridge. There is a nice waiting room and the departure bays are down the escalator. Be sure to be at your bus about 15 minutes before departure to check in your bags and for the
security check. In T2, turn right once upstairs in the departures area and you'll see the bus departure bays at the far end of the terminal by Gate 4. All the buses leave from here initially and continue to T1 before heading to their final destination. If in doubt about how to get from arrivals to the bus bays, hire a porter.

Sportsman Channel 'Rifleman' host killed by gunman

WHITEFISH, Mont. (AP) ? A northwestern Montana man shot and killed the host of the Sportsman Channel show "A Rifleman's Journal" while the TV personality was visiting the shooter's wife, police said Friday.

Wayne Bengston, 41, then beat his wife, took his 2-year-old son to a relative's house and drove to his home about 25 miles away in West Glacier, where he apparently killed himself, Whitefish police said.

Police identified the shooting victim Gregory G. Rodriguez, 43, of Sugar Land, Texas. Bengston's wife told police that Rodriguez was in town on business and visiting her at her mother's house in Whitefish when her husband showed up Thursday night.

It wasn't clear how Rodriguez and the woman were acquainted.

After the shooting, Flathead County sheriff's deputies found Bengston's truck parked in his driveway. Efforts by a police SWAT team to contact Bengston inside the house were unsuccessful, and officers found the man's body with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Besides appearing on TV, Rodrigues was the founder and CEO of Global Adventure Outfitters. According to the outfitters' website, he was an editor at Shooting Times Magazine and a contributing editor at Petersen's Hunting, Guns & Ammo and Dangerous Game.

He was a mortgage banker before founding Global Adventure Outfitters, and he has hunted in 21 countries, the website says.

"A Rifleman's Journal" tracks Rodriguez's hunting travels to exotic locations, according to a Sportsman Channel description.

He has a wife and two children, it says.

A woman who answered the phone at Global Adventure Outfitters Friday confirmed Rodriguez had been in Montana, but said the organization would not be making a statement at the time.

AT&T: 'we unlock our customers' devices'

AT&T 'we unlock our customers' devices'

To our delight, the recent ruling that phone subsidy unlocks are no longer protected by copyright law has sparked a lot of attention from the general public as well as the US government. However, some of the carriers are predictably not too excited by the amount of negative light it sheds on their own unlock policies. AT&T has taken to its public policy blog to discuss its viewpoint on the matter. Joan Marsh, VP of Federal Regulatory for the company, insists that "the ruling has very little impact on AT&T customers."

Marsh reiterates AT&T's unlock policy by stating: "if we have the unlock code or can reasonably get it from the manufacturer, AT&T currently will unlock a device for any customer whose account has been active for at least sixty days; whose account is in good standing and has no unpaid balance; and who has fulfilled his or her service agreement commitment. If the conditions are met we will unlock up to five devices per account per year."

Samsung gets a foot in at key Apple supplier Sharp with $110 million investment

TOKYO/SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co , with a $110 million investment in cash-strapped Sharp Corp , will broaden its supplier base, gain access to low-power thin screen technology and get a foot in the door at one of Apple Inc's key Asian display suppliers.

The relatively low-cost deal will leave Samsung with a 3 percent stake in Japan's TV pioneer, making it a leading foreign shareholder alongside chipmaker Qualcomm Inc , which in December agreed to invest as much as $120 million. Shares in Sharp, which was bailed out by its banks last October, jumped on news of the lifeline.

It is also a rare cross-border technology deal between two rival countries and the first time the South Korean TV maker has taken a stake in a major Japanese rival. Japan's three big TV set makers, Sharp, Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp , are struggling to overcome losses as Samsung clobbers them in overseas markets.

Although Sharp is one of Samsung's smallest suppliers, its importance to the Korean company will likely grow as demand for large-screen TVs over 60 inches burgeons, analysts say. Preferential pricing could improve Samsung's competitive edge in TVs.

The deal could also niggle Apple by soaking up capacity at a plant that makes iPad and iPhone 5 screens. Analysts and industry researchers estimate that Sharp is Apple's second-biggest supplier after LG Display Co Ltd .

"An investment by Samsung will also prevent Apple from having exclusive access to Sharp," said Jeff Kang, an analyst at Daishin Securities in Seoul.

Samsung may also benefit from access to the Japanese company's screen technology.

SURVIVAL

Sharp, which got its start a century ago with mechanical pencils, makes high-resolution indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) screens that are thinner than conventional LCDs, require less backlighting, and consume as little as a tenth the power, giving mobile phones and other devices that use them longer battery life.

That could allow Samsung to focus more squarely on an alternative display technology, organic light-emitting diode or OLED screens as thin as a credit card. The company has yet to announce when it will manufacture OLED TVs, which its home rival LG Electronics Inc started selling in February.

Analysts covering Samsung also said it may want to tie up with or even acquire Sharp's solar panel business.

For Sharp, the deal bolsters its chances of survival not only by putting much needed cash in its coffers but by generating new business that will help it to utilize more factory capacity.

"Rather than the amount of investment, it is the partnership with Samsung that Sharp gains that is important," said Tetsuro Ii, chief executive officer of Commons AM, a Tokyo based investment fund.

"Sharp has an opportunity to use the Samsung platform."

The Japanese company has had to slash production of Apple's iPad screens at its Kameyama facility since the start of the year, sources with knowledge of its output plans told Reuters in January, as consumer demand shifts to the iPad mini, for which Sharp is not a supplier.

The deal also comes as a previous agreement for Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd to buy a 9.9 percent stake for 67 billion yen ($720 million) is unraveling, given a steep decline in Sharp's share price and a reluctance by the Japanese firm to cede any management control to the Taiwanese company.

Separate sources told Reuters last month that a bank-backed revival plan for Sharp was unlikely to include a capital infusion from Hon Hai, which last year bought a one-third stake in Sharp's LCD plant in Sakai, western Japan.

That plant is the world's only so-called 10th-generation display factory, which uses bigger sheets of glass that can be cut into large TV screens with less waste and lower cost.

A Hon Hai spokesman said the Samsung deal would not alter his company's cooperation with Sharp and that investment talks were continuing between the two.

DEBT-LADEN

Sharp is also relying on a deal with Qualcomm. The U.S. company made an initial investment of half the promised $120 million amount at the end of the year in a private placement of stock, giving the U.S. company a 2.64 percent stake after dilution. Payment of the remainder is conditional on Sharp posting a profit in the six months to March 31, after it reported a 388 billion yen net loss in the previous six months.

Through its Pixtronix subsidiary, Qualcomm said it plans to work with Sharp to develop new power-saving screens based on the company's IGZO technology.

To secure a $4.4 billion bailout last year from banks including Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi Financial Group , Sharp had to agree to trim its workforce by 10,000 and mortgage its offices and factories in Japan, limiting its ability to sell assets other than overseas facilities.

Sharp, which in November said it may not be able to survive on its own, may sell its Chinese TV assembly plant to Lenovo Group Ltd and is in talks to sell its Mexico factory to Hon Hai, according to sources.

A junk rating from credit agencies has also made raising money in the credit markets an expensive proposition for Sharp. Standard & Poor's rates Sharp's debt as B+, a highly speculative grade, while Fitch Ratings has Sharp lower at B-. Moody's Investors Service withdrew its rating on Sharp in April of last year.

Those limited funding options have spurred speculation that Sharp, which has to redeem a 200 billion yen convertible bond in September, will resort to further stock sales.

Yet, any major share offer in the future is unlikely because of dilution worries, said Deutsche Securities analyst Yasuo Nakane. "It will likely meet its refinancing need through a mixture of cashflow generated from profits, capital injections and asset sales," he said.

Sharp's stock closed 14 percent higher at 341 yen on Wednesday, lifted by news that a deal with Samsung, which was announced after markets closed, was imminent. Samsung's stock rose 0.7 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Peter King of New York is lacing up his boxing gloves for a fight that has nothing to do with budget cuts.

The 68-year-old Republican is known more for his bare-knuckle politics than his pugilistic skills. He said Wednesday he plans to step into the ring Saturday for a two-round exhibition bout against a New York state kickboxing champion, "Irish" Josh Foley, at a pub in Wantagh, N.Y.

"Some people have been comparing my bout with Foley to Tiger Woods playing golf with President Obama," King said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "If Foley goes all out, it will be a very quick fight."

The congressman said he weighs in at about 230 pounds and has been training for about nine years. The bout isn't for charity, he said.

"We'll be sparring," King said. "If anyone is going to get knocked out, it will be me. I can tell you that much."

He also joked that while he plans to throw real punches, Foley will probably throw "sort-of-real punches."

King said that back in 1991, he sparred with former pro Seamus McDonagh in an exhibition bout on the 20th anniversary of the first Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali fight.

"I've been a big boxing fan for a long time," he said.

While King expects about 1,000 people for his bout, his wife, Rosemary, won't be in the crowd.

"It's her birthday and she hates boxing," he said. "She's already told the police not to bother to come and get her if anything happens to me."

Leading proxy firms seek ouster of HP chairman, directors

(Reuters) - Two leading proxy advisers on Tuesday urged Hewlett-Packard Co shareholders to oust several directors for their role in the ill-fated 2011 acquisition of British software company Autonomy, with No. 1 proxy firm ISS issuing a rare call to reject Chairman Ray Lane.

ISS, closely followed by investors seeking guidance on controversial issues, has suggested voting against Lane, a managing partner at high-powered Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins. They also gave fellow board members John Hammergren and G. Kennedy Thompson the thumbs-down.

The recommendation against Lane marked one of the few "special cases" in which ISS has advised shareholders against re-electing the chairman of the board.

In 2012, it recommended against Wal-Mart Stores Inc Chairman Robson Walton and other directors for failing to fully investigate allegations of widespread bribery by company officials in Mexico.

And in 2009, ISS advised shareholders to vote against re-electing Bank of America Chairman Ken Lewis, following its costly acquisition of Merrill Lynch.

"It doesn't happen that often," said Charles Elson, a University of Delaware professor specializing in corporate governance. But Elson said the recommendations at HP seem to reflect specific problems, such as the Autonomy deal, rather than a fundamental shift in approach by the firm.

Also on Tuesday, Glass Lewis recommended shareholders vote to remove four directors - including venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Rajiv Gupta, along with Hammergren and Thompson.

Both firms blamed the directors for inadequate due diligence relating to the acquisition of Autonomy. HP, which acquired the British firm for $11.1 billion, took a massive writedown on its value last year and accused former Autonomy executives, including then-Chief Executive Mike Lynch, of accounting fraud.

Lynch has denied the allegations. A HP spokesman said the "board fully supports the election of each of the director nominees named in the proxy statement."

The recommendations, which could help sway undecided shareholders ahead of HP's annual meeting on March 20 in Mountain View, California, came days after a strongly worded declaration from union pension adviser and shareholder CtW Investment Group.

CtW also urged shareholders to reject board members Hammergren and Thompson, though CtW and Glass Lewis are not opposing Lane's re-election.

Despite the recommendation to vote against the directors, it is fairly rare for directors to not get elected, said David Eaton, vice president of research at Glass Lewis.

"This raises some issues for HP that they would want to get ahead of," Eaton said, adding that it is fairly common for companies to reach out to shareholders in such cases to get a sense of how they would be voting.

'OVERSIGHT FAILURE'

Glass Lewis had also recommended against the re-election of Andreessen, Gupta, Hammergren and Thompson last year for their role in the hiring of former HP CEO Leo Apotheker. Now, both proxy firms say directors should be held accountable for Autonomy - a deal many on Wall Street say was sharply over-priced and has so far borne little fruit for HP's software division. Current CEO Meg Whitman also voted for the deal, but was not mentioned in Tuesday's filings.

"While developments surrounding the 2011 Autonomy deal may continue in the coming months, it is clear that the due diligence process that occurred at that time was not robust," ISS said in a report.

It said Lane, Hammergren and Thompson "bear the most responsibility for a very costly oversight failure."

Thompson was formerly chairman and CEO of Wachovia Corp, the North Carolina bank bought by Wells Fargo & Co in 2008.

Hammergren is chairman and CEO of U.S. drug wholesaler McKesson Corp. Thompson chairs the HP board's audit committee, while Hammergren chairs its finance and investment committee, according to HP's proxy.

On Tuesday, CtW welcomed ISS' recommendation, saying it would help finish an overhaul of the board that had begun a year or two ago, after a series of missteps starting with a wiretapping scandal in which it gave the go-ahead to monitor journalists' conversations, up to the ouster of former CEO Mark Hurd over his relationship with a female contractor.

"The ISS recommendation adds enormous weight to the case for removing long-tenured Hewlett-Packard directors and finish the Board renewal," said Dieter Waizenegger, recently appointed executive director of CtW.

"Despite having unanimously approved the Autonomy deal, the board continues to try to sweep the debacle under the rug by blaming the mess on a previous CEO it appointed. The Board must hold itself accountable, especially those directors who most clearly failed investors."

HP shares rose 2 percent to finish at $20.37 as the Dow Jones Industrial Index surged to a new high.

Maryland moves close to abolishing death penalty

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

Maryland?s Senate voted Wednesday to repeal the death penalty, moving the state one step closer to joining 17 others that ban capital punishment.

The Senate voted 27-20 to pass legislation that would replace execution with a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. The bill must be approved by the House of Delegates before becoming law.

Gov. Martin O'Malley said he was pleased with the vote.

"We remain hopeful that we will see a similar outcome in the House," he said in a statement. "It's time to end this ineffective and expensive practice and put our efforts behind crime fighting strategies that work."

Maryland has five inmates on death row, although no executions have been conducted since 2005. The state has carried out five executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1978, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

?The vote in the Maryland Senate to end the death penalty is in line with an emerging trend away from capital punishment around the country,? Richard Dieter, the center?s executive director, said in a statement. ?Death sentences and executions have sharply declined, and now states are taking the final step toward eliminating the death penalty.?

Last year, Connecticut lawmakers abolished the death penalty, replacing it with life without parole, but voters in California rejected a law that would have ended capital punishment.

Some states are considering similar legislation, such as Montana, Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon and Delaware. The number of people sentenced to death in 2012 ? 78 ? marked a 75 percent decline from the 315 sentences imposed in 1996, the center said.

Supporters believe it will pass the House, but opponents think the issue will ultimately be decided by popular vote, The Associated Press reported.

US stocks climb following Dow's record day

NEW YORK (AP) ? An unexpectedly large increase in private hiring helped send stocks higher in midday trading, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average tore through its previous record high.

The Dow was up 32 points at 14,285 shortly before noon Wednesday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose a point to 1,541. The Nasdaq composite was also up a point at 3,225.

Payroll processor ADP reported that companies added 198,000 workers in February, more than economists were expecting. The survey also revised the previous month's numbers up.

Microsoft was one of the few Dow members to fall, dropping 1 percent. European regulators fined the company for failing to follow an antitrust agreement requiring Microsoft to offer computer users a choice of Internet browsers, instead of just Internet Explorer.

Global warming will open unexpected new shipping routes in Arctic, UCLA researchers find

Global warming will open unexpected new shipping routes in Arctic, UCLA researchers find

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Shipping lanes through the Arctic Ocean won't put the Suez and Panama canals out of business anytime soon, but global warming will make these frigid routes much more accessible than ever imagined by melting an unprecedented amount of sea ice during the late summer, new UCLA research shows.

"The development is both exciting from an economic development point of view and worrisome in terms of safety, both for the Arctic environment and for the ships themselves," said lead researcher Laurence C. Smith, a professor of geography at UCLA.

The findings, which explore accessibility during the Arctic's most navigable month of the year, September, appear in the latest issue of the scholarly journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Plus. The first thorough assessment of trans-Arctic shipping potential as global temperatures continue to rise, the study is based on independent climate forecasts for the years 2040 to 2059.

By mid-century, even ordinary shipping vessels will be able to navigate previously inaccessible parts of the Arctic Ocean, and they will not need icebreakers to blaze their path as they do today, the researchers found.

"We're talking about a future in which open-water vessels will, at least during some years, be able to navigate unescorted through the Arctic, which at the moment is inconceivable," said co-author Scott R. Stephenson, a Ph.D. candidate in the UCLA Department of Geography.

Just as surprisingly, the Arctic ice sheet is expected to thin to the point that polar icebreakers will be able to navigate between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans by making a straight shot over the North Pole, Smith and Stephenson predict.

"Nobody's ever talked about shipping over the top of the North Pole," Smith said. "This is an entirely unexpected possibility."

The route directly over the North Pole is 20 percent shorter than today's most-trafficked Arctic shipping lane, the Northern Sea Route, which hugs the coast of Russia. For vessels traveling between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Yokohama, Japan, the Northern Sea Route is already approximately 40 percent shorter than the traditional route through the Suez Canal.

Even the fabled and notoriously treacherous Northwest Passage, which traces Canada's coastline and offers the most direct route from Asia to eastern Canada and the northeasternmost part of the U.S., is expected to become more viable for Polar Class 6 vessels ? a common type of ship that has been strengthened against ice ? and possibly even ships with unreinforced hulls, which make up the lion's share of the world's commercial fleet.

Today, the Northwest Passage is theoretically navigable only one out of seven years, on average, making it too unreliable to be a viable option for commercial shippers, the researchers said. But by mid-century, sea ice will melt in September to the point that it is accessible every other year, on average. Choosing whether to ship through the passage "will become a coin toss," Smith said.

The predictions, however, do not foresee access beyond late summer. "This will never be a year-round operation," Smith stressed.

Smith is an authority on the ways in which climate change is affecting the Arctic, where average temperatures have risen faster than the global average since the mid-1980s. He has quantified the disappearance of more than 1,000 Arctic lakes. He also is the author of "The World in 2050: Four Forces Shaping Civilization's Northern Future," a 2010 book that looks at new economic opportunities, as well as environmental degradation, taking shape in the northern quarter of the globe. With Stephenson, Smith has calculated the toll global warming will take on Arctic ice roads and the communities and businesses that depend on them.

For centuries, the Arctic Ocean has captured the imagination of explorers because of the possibility it offers for traveling between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans through the Bering Strait. Until recently, however, sea ice has blocked access to the potential shortcut between Asia and North America or Europe. But in the past two years, the ice has begun to melt in late summer to such an extent that even ordinary seagoing vessels, albeit with escorts, have been able to enter its frigid waters. In summer 2012, a total of 46 voyages successfully crossed the Northern Sea Route.

To arrive at their predictions, Smith and Stephenson studied these emerging shipping routes and the degree of ice melt that has made them possible. They then took the results from seven respected forecasts for the sea ice cover in the Arctic and averaged predictions for the extent of the Arctic ice sheet in September, historically the month when the ocean has the least amount of ice coverage, for every year between 2040 and 2059.

The researchers factored in two scenarios for climate change: one that assumed a 25 percent increase in global carbon emissions, which is generally expected to produce a medium-low increase in temperatures, and one that assumed an additional 10 percent increase in emissions, which is expected to produce a higher increase in temperatures. To their surprise, changes in accessibility were similarly dramatic under both scenarios.

"No matter which carbon emission scenario is considered, by mid-century we will have passed a crucial tipping point ? sufficiently thin sea ice ? enabling moderately capable icebreakers to go where they please," Smith said.

The mid-century projections may seem distant when measured against the lifespan of adults living today, the researchers concede. But the period falls well within the long lead times of commercial and governmental planning efforts. As such, the projections have implications for port construction, acquisition of natural resources and the establishment of jurisdiction of shipping lanes, Smith and Stephenson stress.

Canada, for instance, has long maintained that the Northwest Passage falls under Canadian sovereignty, while the U.S. maintains it is an international strait. As long as the passage was essentially unnavigable, the issue was moot, but increasing accessibility could bring the U.S. into dispute with its northern neighbor, the researchers warn.

The increasing viability of shipping routes through the Arctic is also likely to increase pressure on the U.S. to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Some newly accessible shipping lanes would pass through waters over which the U.S. could make internationally accepted sovereignty claims if it ratified the treaty, the researchers said. Countries that claim sovereignty are able to lay down rules for the vessels that pass through their waters. Russia, which controls the Northern Sea Route, currently requires shipping companies to pay steep fees for escort vessels to accompany their fleets.

The unprecedented new navigation routes that are expected to open up could allow shipping companies to sidestep these escort fees and other Russian regulations, but these new lanes could take Polar Class 6 vessels and even common ships into less-regulated international waters.

While attractive to business, the lack of regulations poses safety, environmental and legal issues that have yet to be resolved, the researchers stress. The prospect of open-water ships entering the Arctic Ocean in late summer heightens the urgency for comprehensive international regulations that provide adequate environmental protections, vessel safety standards and search-and-rescue capability, they said.

"The Arctic is a fragile and dangerous place," Smith said.

Gene discovery reveals importance of eating your greens

Mar. 3, 2013 ? Eating your greens may be even more important that previously thought, with the discovery that an immune cell population essential for intestinal health could be controlled by leafy greens in your diet.

The immune cells, named innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), are found in the lining of the digestive system and protect the body from 'bad' bacteria in the intestine. They are also believed to play an important role in controlling food allergies, inflammatory diseases and obesity, and may even prevent the development of bowel cancers.

Dr Gabrielle Belz, Ms Lucie Rankin, Dr Joanna Groom and colleagues from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute's Molecular Immunology division have discovered the gene T-bet is essential for producing a population of these critical immune cells and that the gene responds to signals in the food we eat.

Dr Belz said the research team revealed T-bet was essential for generating a subset of ILCs which is a newly discovered cell type that protects the body against infections entering through the digestive system. "In this study, we discovered that T-bet is the key gene that instructs precursor cells to develop into ILCs, which it does in response to signals in the food we eat and to bacteria in the gut," Dr Belz said. "ILCs are essential for immune surveillance of the digestive system and this is the first time that we have identified a gene responsible for the production of ILCs."

The research was published today in the journal Nature Immunology.

Dr Belz said that the proteins in green leafy (cruciferous) vegetables are known to interact with a cell surface receptor that switches on T-bet, and might play a role in producing these critical immune cells. "Proteins in these leafy greens could be part of the same signalling pathway that is used by T-bet to produce ILCs," Dr Belz said. "We are very interested in looking at how the products of these vegetables are able to talk to T-bet to make ILCs, which will give us more insight into how the food we eat influences our immune system and gut bacteria."

ILCs are essential for maintaining the delicate balance between tolerance, immunity and inflammation. Ms Rankin said the discovery had given the research team further insight into external factors responsible for ILC activation. "Until recently, it has been difficult to isolate or produce ILCs," Ms Rankin said. "So we are very excited about the prospect for future research on these cells which are still poorly understood."

ILCs produce a hormone called interleukin-22 (IL-22), which can protect the body from invading bacteria, Dr Belz said. "Our research shows that, without the gene T-bet, the body is more susceptible to bacterial infections that enter through the digestive system. This suggests that boosting ILCs in the gut may aid in the treatment of these bacterial infections," she said.

ILCs help to maintain a 'healthy' environment in the intestine by promoting good bacteria and healing small wounds and abrasions that are common in the tissues of the gut. They may also have a role in resolving cancerous lesions. "The discovery of these immune cells has thrown open a completely new way of looking at gut biology," Dr Belz said. "We are just starting to understand how important these immune cells are in regulating allergy and inflammation, and the implications for bowel cancer and other gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease," she said.

"Understanding the biology of ILCs and the genes that are essential for generating them will help us to develop methods of targeting these cells," Dr Belz said. "This might include boosting ILCs in situations where they may not be active enough, such as infections or some cancers, or depleting them in situations where they are overactive, such as chronic inflammatory disease," she said.

(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez is breathing with greater difficulty as a new and severe respiratory infection has taken hold, Venezuela's government said, describing the cancer-stricken president's condition as "very delicate."

A brief statement read on national television by Communications Minister Ernesto Villegas late Monday carried the sobering news about the charismatic 58-year-old socialist leader's deteriorating health.

Villegas said Chavez is suffering from "a new, severe infection." The state news agency identified it as respiratory.

Chavez, 58, has been undergoing "chemotherapy of strong impact," Villegas added without providing further details.

Chavez has neither been seen nor heard from, except for "proof-of-life" photos released in mid-February, since submitting to a fourth round of surgery in Cuba on Dec. 11 for an unspecified cancer in the pelvic area. It was first diagnosed in June 2011.

The government says he returned home on Feb. 18 and has been confined to Caracas' military hospital since.

Villegas said Chavez was "standing by Christ and life conscious of the difficulties he faces."

He also took the opportunity to lash out at "the corrupt Venezuelan right" for what he called a psychological war seeking "scenarios of violence as a pretext for foreign intervention."

He called on Chavez's supporters, who include thousands of well-armed militiamen, to be "on a war footing."

Upon Chavez's death, the opposition would contest the government's candidate in a snap election that it argues should have been called after Chavez was unable to be sworn in on Jan. 10 as the constitution stipulates.

Indeed, the campaigning has already begun, although undeclared, with Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who Chavez has said should succeed him, frequently commandeering all broadcast channels Chavez-style to tout the "revolution" and vilify the opposition.

Chavez has run Venezuela for more than 14 years as a virtual one-man show, gradually placing all state institutions under his personal control. But the former army paratroop officer who rose to fame with a failed 1992 coup, never groomed a successor with his force of personality.

Chavez was last re-elected on Oct. 7, and his challenger, youthful Miranda state Gov. Henrique Capriles, is expected to again be the opposition's candidate.

On state TV Monday night, opinion show host Mario Silva slung the latest volley of mud at Capriles, claiming his family had purchased a multi-million-dollar New York City apartment with stolen money.

Opposition lawmaker Julio Borges condemned Villegas' political use of Monday night's health bulletin. "I lament such a poverty of humanity," he tweeted.

Pro-Chavez militant Enrique Barroso sounded grave when reached by telephone.

"This is not easy for him nor for us," he said. "We call on the people to pray and hold vigil for the health of the president."

One of Chavez's three daughters, Maria Gabriela, expressed thanks to well-wishers via her Twitter account. "We will prevail!" she wrote, echoing a favorite phrase of her father. "With God always."

There has been speculation that Chavez's cancer has spread to his lungs and can't be halted.

An oncologist not involved in Chavez's treatment, which has been conducted in tightly enforced secrecy, told The Associated Press that he viewed Villegas' statement as recognition that Chavez's condition is "truly precarious."

He called into question the veracity of Villegas' statement that Chavez had been undergoing chemotherapy, saying patients in such a delicate state are not put on chemotherapy.

Maduro said last week, in the first such announcement, that the president had begun receiving chemotherapy around the end of January.

Doctors have said that such therapy was not necessarily to try to beat Chavez's cancer into remission but could have been palliative, to extend Chavez's life and ease his suffering.

While in Cuba, Chavez suffered severe respiratory infection in late December that nearly killed him, Maduro said last week. A tracheal tube was inserted then and government officials have said his breathing remained labored.

They have sent mixed signals throughout Chavez's post-operative days, and in an early February opinion survey nearly three in five Venezuelans said they believed the president whose largesse has endeared him to the poor would recover.

In Cuba, Chavez has undergone a series of radiation treatments and chemotherapy after his operations.

The entire treatment regimen was kept far from public scrutiny.
