Optimus 2X ICS update now looking like a Q3 arrival, according to LG Singapore

Android Central

According to the LG SIngapore Facebook page, the tradition of long waits for updates is set to continue for owners of the LG Optimus 2X. Gingerbread took what seemed like an eternity, but initially the device was slated to receive Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2 of 2012. That now seems unlikely, with LG Singapore answering a query on Facebook, stating it will be Q3 for the long awaited update.

If indeed this is true, it will be yet another bitter blow to owners of the device, which kicked off the dual-core age of Android smartphones. Q3 after all stretches through to September, by which time we'll have been through Google I/O, and very possibly seen the first mentions of the next version of Android.

The big redeeming factor with the 2X in particular though, is it's hackability. My own device currently runs a very early build of CM9, and for all intents and purposes, it's pretty darn good. LG make fantastic hardware, it's such a shame to keep hearing stories such as this one.

HP takes print away from town for seven days, laughs at 'print is dead' claim

Image

With e-books and digital subscription of magazines and newspapers becoming the new hot, many are sending off the message that print is gradually losing or has even already lost to its digital counterpart, while others argue that print is far from dead. Needless to say, being one of the leading manufacturers of printers, HP took the "print is dead" claim quite personally -- and perhaps too literally. How so? Well, the company commissioned a project that got participants in the US, India and Singapore to live without printed materials -- including newspapers, books, labels, packaging, ID cards and even some clothes -- for two days. Needless to say, those folks struggled really badly, but HP certainly proved that "the role of print is vastly underestimated" and that "true print deprivation was impossible."

If you think that's an overkill, just you wait: HP and renowned photographer Chase Jarvis even went as far as getting a Wisconsin town called Spring Green to undergo a similar experiment, but for a duration of seven days. The entire project will be presented in a video documentary called 7 Days Without Print, and ahead of its premiere at Guggenheim Museum in New York on June 14, we were shown an exclusive trailer for said movie at HP's Global Influencer Summit in Shanghai. For the sake of those poor participants, do check out the clip right after the break.

Did gassy dinosaurs cause global warming?

A new study found that giant plant-eating dinosaurs could have produced giant quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Dinosaurs' gassy guts may have contributed to global warming tens of millions of years ago, according to a new study that finds a group of plant-eating dinosaurs could have produced about as much methane as all of today's natural and man-made sources of the greenhouse gas.

British researchers reported in Tuesday's edition of the journal Current Biology that the methane emissions from sauropods far outstripped those of today's cattle, goats and other cud-chewing mammals.

Sauropods were a diverse bunch of plant-eating dinosaurs, known for their small heads and giant bodies with long necks and tails. An average-sized sauropod _ such as Apatosaurus louisae, once popularly known as brontosaurus _ could weigh 44,000 pounds, making it several times bigger than an elephant.

Like many modern herbivores, scientists think, sauropods probably hosted a diverse community of microbes in their guts to help break down and digest their food, producing methane in the process. In cattle and other ruminants, that gas is released in the form of burps and flatulence.

Such emissions from modern-day cattle are considered a major source of the greenhouse gas, adding up to roughly 55 million to 110 million tons per year. Though carbon dioxide is more abundant in the atmosphere, methane is more than 20 times as effective at trapping heat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The problem of cattle emissions prompted ecologist David Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University in England to consider the climate-changing effects of sauropods.

He and two other researchers used a formula from a study last year that linked body mass to methane emissions from guinea pigs and rabbits. The relationship is straightforward: The more body mass there is, the more methane is produced.

For their investigation, Wilkinson and his colleagues had to make some assumptions _ for example, that the ratio of body size to gas produced is the same for small and extremely large animals. "That's a slightly dodgy thing to do," Wilkinson acknowledged, "but in this case there's not any other option."

The researchers also used published population estimates from the late Jurassic (about 161 to 145 million years ago) to gauge how many sauropods had been roaming the Earth back then.

Altogether, the team concluded, sauropods were likely producing on the order of 572 million tons of methane per year _ more than five times as much methane as modern-day cattle and other ruminants. Today, worldwide emissions from animals and from such human activities as burning natural gas and collecting trash in landfills is estimated to produce 550 million to 660 million tons of methane per year, the researchers said.

Wilkinson said he expected to find that the dinosaurs were perhaps only a little more productive than today's animals. The results, he said, "surprised me."

It would take more study of the ancient climate to find out whether, and how, sauropods warmed Earth's atmosphere during the Mesozoic era, said Marcus Clauss, a digestive physiologist at the University of Zurich who helped develop the formula for determining methane emissions from body mass.

Wilkinson's team was not the first to suspect that Earth's ancient behemoths were responsible for some climate change: A 2010 study in the journal Nature Geoscience found that atmospheric methane levels dropped in the Americas once native megafauna such as mammoths and giant ground sloths went extinct _ around the same time that humans arrived on the continents.

Nokia confirms intent to bring unlocked Pureview 808 handset to US

Nokia's major focal points within the US market may currently be its Lumia 900 and Windows Phone, but that doesn't mean it's planning to leave its other notable offerings outside of Uncle Sam's borders. Speaking with PC Mag, Nokia executive Chris Weber explained that the company aims to offer its current imaging- / Symbian Belle flagship-handset, the 41-megapixel Pureview 808, north of Mexico in the "next couple of months" -- unsurprising, considering it recently passed through the underground testing-chambers of the FCC. Unlike the Lumia, however, this mega-phone will only be sold unlocked, naturally sporting AT&T bands for connectivity. While we're still eager to find out more detailed availability information, you can now rest assured that you'll soon be able to capture highly detailed photos of your freedom fries to post on Tumblr.

Nokia loses UK appeal against IPCom's pointless patent posturing

Image

Nokia has had its appeal dismissed in the UK High Court in its Europe-wide patent battle against IPCom. The court found that the handset maker had infringed the German firm's 3G patent, but only on the Nokia N96 -- a phone the company no longer sells. IPCom can now request a ban on all British sales of the 2008 handset, a move that will probably affect tens of people. We've got an official response from Nokia's Mark Durrant after the break.

The History of CM Punk and Daniel Bryan

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan's long, strange road to the WWE Title

The WWE Champion is not supposed to be here.

They said he was too small, a straight-edge scrapper who was about as far from the flamboyant WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels as can be, and far too much of an ?internet darling? to reach the lofty heights of the title he now holds.

The No. 1 contender is not supposed to be here, either. He is a 5-foot-10 vegan in a land of red-blooded, meaty hulks, a man who wins matches with submission holds instead of bone-crunching strikes. Not exactly Hulk Hogan reincarnate, in other words.

And yet, here CM Punk and Daniel Bryan are. The important thing to realize is that it is not a rivalry born of natural animosity, like Austin vs. McMahon. It is not born of betrayal, like Hart vs. Michaels, nor does it stem from self-destructive impulse, like Triple H vs. The Undertaker.

Instead, Punk vs. Bryan is a rivalry born of destiny, in an oddly roundabout way. The WWE Champion and his upstart, egomaniacal challenger are among a rare breed of WWE Superstar in that, from the very beginning, they were not supposed to reach WWE according to many . They do not come from the same kind of sports-entertainment pedigree as titans like Bret Hart and The Rock. They?re journeymen in the truest sense, hard workers who suffered and bled for their sport to reach for the top rather than be recruited by WWE?s developmental system, They are also the wiry, athletic type that is typically deemed too odd, too puny and too ?indie-looking ? to thrive in the land of giants.

But somehow, to the growing disbelief of even their most ardent fans, Punk and Bryan did succeed. One of them has held the WWE Championship for five months now. The other held the World Heavyweight Championship for four before losing it at WrestleMania XXVIII. And at WWE Over the Limit, The Second City Saint will put his prize on the line against the man who many believe to be his greatest foil, despite the fact they haven?t met all that often in the middle of the squared circle.

It?s as strange a WWE Championship rivalry as the WWE Universe is ever likely to see, and certainly one many thought they never would. And make no mistake: the road they took to get there was not an easy one ?

I never wanted to join Facebook. I never wanted to join anything online, really. I was coerced into creating a Xanga at some point, and eventually -- when Facebook opened up to NC State email addresses -- I begrudgingly created an account there, too. I had a "thing" about opening my life up to the internet. I knew already that prospective employers would inevitably go digging through shots of me celebrating at an NCSU basketball game and spike my resume in the trash can beside his or her UNC degree. More than anything, though, I just didn't care what anyone else was doing. I kept a handful of comrades close to my chest, and everyone else was a mere acquaintance. At the time, I blamed it on the 21 hours of courses I was taking entirely on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- who has time for online networking when you're in an educational torture chamber? -- but now I realize the truth: I never wanted Facebook to be a social network.

City of Detroit is paying $65,000 for a 2004 Dodge Intrepid that it doesn?t even own

Over 100 other Detroit Police vehicles also needlessly draining taxpayer pockets

For drivers who don't want to commit to a new car purchase, leasing has become a popular option. But for a?police department in a city with a struggling economy, running up a $65,000 bill for what amounts to renting an nine-year-old car seems like a bit of an oversight. That's just what the?Detroit Police Department has been doing since 2003 when it leased a 2004 model Dodge Intrepid at the lofty price of $608 per month. The problem? They've been paying that price ever since.

The original terms of the lease stated that the car would be returned in 2005, at which point the department could choose to buy it outright to take delivery of a newer model. That trade-in never happened, and so far the city has handed out a total of over $56,000 in monthly payments. But that's not all: Because the department has gone well over the original mileage agreement, they owe nearly $10,000 in additional fees, bringing their total bill to well over $65,000. That's $65,000 for a car that could be bought new in 2003 for less than $25,000.

But that's just one vehicle, and the city is currently paying for over a hundred leased cars currently in use, and all of them are operating on expired leases. The seemingly careless spending could total several millions of dollars in the end, and the city apparently has no plans to reverse the practice.

The ridiculous waste of taxpayer money was discovered by local news station?WXYZ, after they obtained the sales records through a Freedom of Information Act request. The station spoke with the president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, Joseph Duncan, who seemed just as outraged at the mismanagement as the taxpayers will be, stating "This is malfeasance. It makes no sense to me."

Decker was on the (snot) bubble for 'Battleship'

Just being a gorgeous, onetime Sports Illustrated model doesn't mean directors are automatically blown away when you decide to become an actress. Nope, as Brooklyn Decker, co-star of the upcoming "Battleship" movie discovered, it takes something special, from your insides.

Like snot bubbles.

"They kept bringing me in [for auditions] and telling me I wasn't tough enough," reported Decker (who is also co-starring in "What to Expect When You're Expecting") during a TODAY appearance Wednesday morning. "And I'm just thinking, this is torture."

So how could she prove herself? The director gave her a specific instruction. "My director said, 'You have to make snot bubbles if you want this part.'"

"I had to make snot bubbles come from my nose," she said, and while she didn't replicate the process, her interviewers -- Ann Curry, Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie -- were suitably grossed out.

"Wow, there goes the glamorous image of the Sports Illustrated model," said Guthrie.

"If that qualifies you for a role, by the way, all of my kids are going to be movie stars," said Lauer.

"Battleship" opens in theaters on May 18.

Y Combinator-Backed Swiftype Builds Site Search That Doesn?t Suck

swiftype logoIn my four-plus years covering tech, I don't think I've ever met another blogger who was happy with the search feature on their website. The options range from terrible to, uh, functional, but it's never good, and I've always found that it's easier to just search via Google. Apparently Matt Riley and Quin Hoxie saw the same problem when they were working at Scribd. So they left to build a better website search engine, one that they're calling Swiftype. The startup was part of Y Combinator's latest class of companies, and it's launching today.

Quality Fire Suppression Systems - Protecting Assets Worldwide

Fire suppression systems are perhaps the most critical safety items that will protect the valuable artifacts in just about any institution. For example, in libraries or museums worldwide there are rare books or artifacts of hundreds of years old, which are priceless. If a fire occurs, all of those precious assets could be destroyed forever. This is why it is so important that institutions or even homes where such artifacts exist are protected efficiently with the best fire suppression systems.

Out of all the damages that can be caused within such an institution (vandalism, theft, humidity, etc.), fire is the most destructive. Within several minutes, hundreds of millions of dollars can be turned into ashes and dust.

There are many fire suppression systems available, but you need to make sure to procure the best ones out there.

When an item is stolen, there is a great chance that it will be at some point recovered; when an artifact is damaged due to vandalism, that item can be repaired/restored; but when valuable items such as paintings, books, archived documents are destroyed by fire, these items are gone for good.

Especially when your cultural items need to be protected, there must be used some fire suppression options that will cause the less possible damage. For instance, by choosing fire suppression systems that use water, these will indeed put out the fire, but all the items might be irreparably damaged because of the huge amounts of water that soak the artifacts/documents/paintings.

You have to do a thorough research online, and see which those suppression systems that utilize less damaging options are, such as the Halon gas.

This is a gas that is odorless, non-toxic and colorless, and it successfully extinguishes fire, without causing any damages in the process. Fire damage is an extremely big concern, but water damage can be equally destructive, especially when it comes to the protection of documents or canvases that are extremely sensitive and valuable.

Such advanced systems are also used in private homes - especially in most of the homes with expensive electronic devices or wooden furniture and carpets, water damage is a big concern as well. The systems that use gas will extinguish the fire quickly and efficiently, and they will not leave a mess.

Always make sure to choose the fire suppression systems that are the best in terms of quality and which create the less possible damage while extinguishing the fire itself.
